What is EMG Test?

EMG Test (electromyography) records the movement of our muscles. It is based on the simple fact that whenever a muscle contracts, a burst of electric activity is generated which propagates through adjacent tissue and bone and can be recorded from neighboring skin areas. The lower motor neurons are the actual instigators of muscle movement, as they innervate the muscle directly at the neuromuscular junction. People are worried about taking health diagnostic tests. Especially like EMG Test.  We may think about what to do and what not to do. There are some common questions that may occur during EMG test, that are addressed below.

Does Smoking affect EMG test?

Yes, Smoking causes subclinical changes in the myelin sheath and the resulting demyelination causes poor electrotonic conduction. This later results in a decrease in the conduction velocity of nerves.
Do not have smoke for 2 to 3 hours before the test.  Wear loose-fitting clothing to the test.

What is the difference between EMG and NCS?

NCS is a Medical diagnostics test. It very commonly used to evaluate the function and ability of electrical conduction, It helps to diagnose the sensory nerves of the human body.
EMG is used to diagnose conditions related to muscle disorders and to the diseases affecting the connection between nerve and muscles.


Does caffeine affect EMG test?

Yes, you should not have caffeine for 2 to 3 hours before the test.
Do not apply lotions or creams to your skin on the day of the test.
